Geological Origin and Dimensions
The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera in the world. Formed approximately 2.5 million years ago, a massive volcano collapsed in on itself, creating this spectacular crater. The crater spans a diameter of about 19 kilometers, with walls rising 400 to 610 meters above the crater floor. The floor itself covers 260 square kilometers and hosts one of the densest concentrations of wildlife on Earth.
Unique Biodiversity
The Ngorongoro Crater is renowned for its unparalleled wildlife richness. The crater floor is home to an estimated 25,000 large animals, including:
The Big Five: elephants, buffaloes, rhinoceroses (including the critically endangered black rhino), lions, and leopards.
Herbivores: approximately 7,000 wildebeest, 4,000 zebras, and 3,000 eland that permanently reside in the crater.
Predators: around 60-70 lions organized into several prides, as well as spotted hyenas, cheetahs, and leopards.
Birds: the crater is also a paradise for bird enthusiasts, with a wide variety of species, including flamingos at Lake Magadi in the southeastern part of the crater.
