The route departs from Mbeya, in southwestern Tanzania, and covers 764 kilometers on its way to Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. Along the way you cross the border, and the landscape keeps shifting: from the cool highlands and tea plantations around Mbeya, over winding mountain roads and sweeping valleys, to the loose sandy tracks and villages of Malawi's interior. Six riding days across varied terrain call for solid fitness and plenty of power in the legs — but every effort is rewarded with views you won't find anywhere else.

The undisputed highlight of the trip is the night you spend camping on the shores of Lake Malawi, Africa's third-largest lake. After a day of climbs and descents, you pitch your tent with your feet almost in the water while the sun sets behind the mountains across the lake. Fishermen return with their boats, the water laps gently against the shore, and the campfire burns late into the night. This is the moment the journey pauses, and you understand why Malawi is described as the green, beating heart of this continent.
