Fitness preparation
Start training 3–4 months before your departure. Build up gradually: start with 2–3 rides per week of 1–2 hours, and increase to longer rides of 4–6 hours on weekends. The key is saddle time — your body needs to adapt to extended riding. Try to train on unpaved surfaces (gravel, forest tracks) to simulate the trail conditions.
Your bike
A solid mountain bike or gravel bike is ideal. Key requirements:
- Reliable gearing (1x or 2x drivetrain, wide range cassette)
- Tires 40mm or wider (for OG / Special Edition), 29" wheels recommended
- Hydraulic disc brakes
- Comfortable saddle — test it on long training rides before you leave
Make sure your bike is fully serviced 2–3 weeks before departure so there is time for adjustments.
What to pack — essentials
- Cycling shorts (at least 3 pairs) with good padding
- Cycling jerseys (lightweight, breathable)
- Cycling gloves (essential for comfort and grip)
- Helmet (mandatory)
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Sun cream SPF 50+
- Cycling shoes or stiff-soled shoes
- Rain jacket (lightweight)
- Personal first aid kit + prescribed medication
- Water bottles or hydration pack (minimum 2L capacity)
- Small tool kit + spare inner tubes
Medical preparation
Visit your travel clinic 6–8 weeks before departure. Required vaccinations: Yellow Fever. Recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, Meningococcal. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for Kenya and Tanzania — consult your doctor about the most suitable option. Pack a prescription supply of any regular medication plus extras.
Travel insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance including medical repatriation is mandatory. Make sure your policy covers adventure cycling and medical evacuation from remote areas. Keep your insurance documents easily accessible during the trip.
